Black Bean Burgers
Why This Recipe?
Black bean burgers are not vegetarian hamburgers, though they are vegetarian. Their crispy outside and soft inside is more like a sloppy joe or a falafel on a bun. If you want a hamburger, make one of those. If you want something else on a bun, try this. This recipe makes 3 patties.
Ingredients
Patties
- ¾ cup dry black beans
- ⅔ cup bread crumbs
- ½ bell pepper, finely diced
- 1 egg
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- salt, pepper, and MSG to taste
- 1 tbsp cooking oil
Possible Toppings
- cheddar cheese
- lettuce
- tomatoes
- pickles
- avocado/guacamole
- sautéed onions and/or mushrooms
- muffuletta spread
- condiments
Instructions
- Add ¾ cup dry black beans to a pressure cooker. Cover with water and cook for 25 minutes.
- Strain beans and add to a large mixing bowl with all other patty ingredients except cooking oil.
- Mash with a fork to combine until mixture firmly holds together.
- Form mixture into patties of desired size and shape. I enjoy 140 g patties.
- In a large skillet, cook patties in oil over medium heat until lightly browned, 4-6 minutes per side.
- If adding cheese, apply to patties in pan just before done. Add 1-2 tbsp of water and cover to steam melt the cheese.
- Serve on buns and top with desired fixings - don't go crazy, but have fun!
